Wheelchair Skills Assessment & Training: A Hands-On Practical Workshop for SCI Clinicians

Description:
Veterans with SCI require comprehensive wheelchair skills to maximize independence, safety and quality of life. This interactive hands-on workshop will empower SCI therapists to understand, perform and teach manual wheelchair skills ranging from basic propulsion to advanced maneuvers for community access and sports participation. In addition to evidence-based training techniques, ideal manual wheelchair selection and configuration, outcome measures, and program implementation strategies will be discussed. 

Registration:
Limited to 30 participants.

Priority is reserved for physical therapists, occupational therapists and recreation therapists from VA SCI/D Centers; additional clinicians will be accommodated as space allows. Registration will be processed in the order received. 

Fees:
Lunch is on your own.


Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA) In Action Certification Course

Description:
Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA) is a limited auricular (ear) acupuncture protocol frequently used by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and Department of Defense (DoD) for acute and chronic pain. This protocol is taught in a four hour class and may be practiced by a variety of privileged provider types, as determined by their state scope of practice. Over 2,900 healthcare providers have been trained in Battlefield Acupuncture throughout the VHA to date. This course is not limited to VA employees. You may receive certification at this preconference institute.

Registration:
Limited to 30 participants.

Only providers (i.e. Physicians, PAs, RNs, PTs, DCs) whose state license scope of practice allows them to practice acupuncture are eligible to take this course.  You must confirm you meet this requirement before you register.

VA employees must register in TMS either prior to the course, or day of, in order to receive their BFA certificate.

SCI 101; ALS 101; MS 101: Nuts and Bolts of Understanding and Managing SCI&D

Description:
The mission of the Veterans Affairs Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders (SCI&D) System of Care is to support, promote, and maintain the health, independence, quality of life, and productivity of individuals SCI&D throughout their lives. To that aim, this workshop offers a general overview of spinal cord injury and other disorders and a specific review of the unique approaches to the care of individuals with traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI), multiple sclerosis (MS) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This approach aims to educate providers who often work in silos and may or may not have opportunities to integrate knowledge and behaviors around SCI disorders into care. The similarities and differences between SCI, MS, and ALS will be emphasized, providing a better understanding of the specific care needs of these groups of patients.

AIS 101: AIS Made Ridiculously Simple

Description:
The American Spinal Cord Injury Association (ASIA) Impairment Scale (AIS) is the recognized and consistent system of spinal cord injury examination and diagnosis.  This is the format that SCI clinicians utilize to document and communicate among each other.  This session is an annual review session for anyone involved with SCI care.  The session will go through each part of the AIS to include Level of Injury, complete/incompleteness, definition of tetraplegia/paraplegia, AIS scale, and zone of partial preservation.  The instructor will present the session in fun and interactive format, in essence "AIS Made Ridiculously Simple".
